Socket Reconstruction

Problems With The Anophthalmic Socket

Patients who have had an eye enucleated may have socket-related problems including:

  1. Sensitivity to the ocular prosthesis
  2. Deep superior sulcus deformity ie the eye looks sunken above the upper eyelid
  3. Shallow fornices ie the groove between the lids and the deeper tissues is too shallow to support an ocular prosthesis
  4. Contracted socket in cases where primary reconstruction was not optimal

Treatment

Depending on the problem, the following treatment may be prescribed:

  1. Anti-allergy eyedrops
  2. Surgery to augment the orbital volume and/or to reconstruct the fornices including secondary orbital implant or mucous membrane grafting

More challenging cases may require several operations to achieve satisfactory results.

* This is a general guide. If in doubt, please consult your doctor.
