In severe cases of blepharitis,
it may be necessary to scrub the lids 3 times daily. In all patients,
lid hygiene has to be maintained on a long-term basis. In acute
stages, topical antibiotic ointment, such as teytracycline can also
be applied to the lid margin. This is done simply by squeezing a
small amount of the ointment onto the tip of a cotton bud and rubbing
it onto the lid margin. Any excess ointment may then be wiped off.
If there are cornea complications, such as
sterile infiltrates, mild topical steroids may be used, on short
term basis. Ocular lubricants may also be prescribed for the dry
eyes.
